Don't be afraid of being you

Something that we all must do is make sure that we are true to who we are. Sure, there are times when we must show a bit of a different side of us, but in general, we must show who we are to the rest of the world. Of course, I am not saying that we have to yell and scream the look at me idea, but we need to ensure that people see who the true you is.

It is important that we also make sure that we love what we are doing for our job. It can be a challenge to find a job that suits you perfectly, but making sure that you can at least have some aspects that you enjoy is good. There are things that we don’t enjoy in every job but making sure that between work and home you are able to do the things that you love doing. If you are a person that loves talking to others, it’s important that you can do that in some form.

If you have a goofy side, you need to show it sometimes. I don’t mean show it during an important meeting, but people that you spend time with need to see that you do have a sense of humour. Quite a while ago, I surprised someone with a little fun voice that I would sometimes use. The person was shocked, but very happy that I had that side of me that I hadn’t shown them before. Being able to enjoy things is important, and knowing you can show a goofy side to others is important.

One thing that I make sure that I do is to dress to who I am. I am not a person that you will see in dresses or skirts most of the time. For me, I am comfortable in either jeans or casual pants and t-shirts, golf shirts or simple tops. I also make a point of making sure that I do have my favourite colour as part of my wardrobe, so don’t be surprised if you see me wearing something teal.

If people don’t like you for who you are, then they aren’t worth the friendship. You can’t try and please everyone because if you are doing that there is a chance you aren’t pleasing yourself and is that friendship worth it. We need to accept that each person is different and make sure that we accept each other for who we are.

Being able to be you is extremely important, and it is what makes you happen when you get up in the morning and when you are around people. Sure there are going to be people that don’t like some of what you say or do but remember making sure you are happy with who is are is important. You need to be able to look in the mirror and say, “I am being who I am, and I am happy with that person.”

I am who I am

Have you ever had someone try and change who you are? Well, I am going to tell you it is difficult, and it just isn’t going to happen.

I use the words “I am who I am” to explain that I am happy with who I am and that I am not going to let other people try and change me to be what they expect me to be. Sure, I may listen to the person and if it is something that I also see that could be improved I will work on changing it, but I will not let anyone dictate who I should be and how I should act. It is amazing how many people will try and make you fit what they expect even when it isn’t who you are, and it is never going to be you.

I have heard people say that I should be taller, or I should be thinner. Yes, I know I would like to be a little thinner than I am, but at my age, I won’t be growing any taller, so that is something that just isn’t going to happen. Being a certain shape is something that I manage, and I will not let anyone force me to change my shape if it isn’t something that I would end up happy with. I have been extremely skinny before, and I had to admit, sure it was nice in some ways, but I wasn’t happy so why would I want to go back to being that person again.

What is important is making sure that you are happy with yourself and changing just because you want to make someone else happy isn’t a good idea, but you aren’t going to be happy with the results no matter what. The reason you change is to make yourself happy, and that is the biggest reason to make any changes. Sure, people can make suggestions, but that is all they are and that is how you should hear them. If someone doesn’t like how you act or how you look, remember it is just their personal opinion, and you don’t need to make them happy if it isn’t going to make you happy as well.

Pleasing others instead of pleasing yourself isn’t good for you, and that is something that everyone needs to understand. Knowing that you are happy with who you are and being able to stand with your head up high is what is important. Being you and not letting others try and change you to just meet their expectations is important. We are all a little different and no matter if you change for one person, you aren’t going to make someone else happy, so that is something else you need to remember.

I am who I am is what I say to people that try and change me and I know that as long as I am happy with me, and I please some people especially those that love me unconditionally, I will remain that person that I am happy with.

Being Me

There are times when I can laugh when I hear someone talk about me. We have been among a group of people lately and one younger lady was trying to tell her friends who I was.

It is interesting when you can hear what someone else thinks of you and your skills because of course people see you differently than you see yourself. I have had some different experiences when listening to people talk about me and the various skills that I have. A lot of the times it is great to hear the different opinions on my skills levels. There was one time that the person was saying I was just showing off and really couldn't do what I said I could do. To solve that problem I then went on to show both of the people that I wasn't just talking about doing something I was able to do it without a problem. If you think that I can't do something that I have said that I can do ask me to show you and you will find out that I don't say I can do something if I can't.

I enjoy being who I am and just hearing what someone else things can be very interesting. Yes, you have to understand that not everyone is going to have a good opinion of you but that doesn't matter. As long as you aren't saying something that is totally untrue I don't care what you say as it is your opinion of who I am.

I am me and I am very happy with being the person that I have become. Of course there are still things that I am changing and improving so I will continue to be a unique individual and be me.

I am who I am

Sometimes you find someone that wants you to change to meet their expectations.  I have come across this type of person and all I can say is, I am who I am, and you cannot change me.

It is very interesting to see what a person will do to try and make you who they want you to be and not let you be who you are.  In a lot of cases, if someone tries to change me without a very good reason, they are going to find someone that will fight back.  I have my own values and ethics, and theses are extremely important to me and have made me who I am.

I understand that not everyone is going to like all of me, but they have to accept that I have my values, and they need to respect that.  They also have to respect who I am and what I stand for and not try and make me someone different.

People have to understand that everyone is different and have their own views of things and even if you don't agree with a person's views, understand that you don't have to, but you should at least hear their view.  Being able to accept someone for who they are is important because if you try and force a person to change, they may change, but not the way you wanted them to change.  In my case I did change, I changed the way I dealt with the person instead of letting them change the core of me.

I am who I am, and I am not going to let someone else try and change me just because I don't meet their expectations.

Who I Am

I am a:
  • Wife
  • Daughter
  • Sister
  • Aunt
  • Business co-owner
  • Friend
but one thing I so often forget is, I am ME.  I am who I am, and nothing is going to change that.  I so often put everyone else before ME, and I forget I need some time to myself.

I am getting better at moving myself up on the list, but it's taken a lot of work on my part.  I have started to realize that if I don't take the "ME time" I'm not going to be everything else that I say I am.

Learning to put things in priority has been a challenge because I always put everyone else's needs ahead of my own.  Having to say "NO" is something I have also had to learn to do when I am doing everything I can and someone asks me to do more.

Having some time for myself is still a challenge, and I so often feel guilty when I take it.  I feel I should be doing something else that needs to get done.  What I don't say to myself is, "you are doing something important".  My biggest excuse for not taking the "me time" is I have something else that needs to get done.

I am going to work harder at ensuring that I look after myself and do things for myself more often.  By doing this, I know I will be a happier person and I will be able to get all the other things done.

So who I am is ME and I will remember that when I am taking some time to recharge, think and do things that make this individual happy.

People wanting to be like me

I must admit that something that has caused me some fear is when a couple of people have said they want to be like me when they grow up. What has really caused this fear is I am still trying to figure out who I am.

One thing I think these people see if someone who shows a level of confidence which I do try and show out in public. What I don't show is someone that sometimes wants to just hide and not deal with people.

The parts that people see are the parts that I am a little more confident about. I do a lot of crafts so that part of me is something I do show a bit more than other parts. What most people haven't known about me is that I have competed with some of my crafts and ribboned. I don't say that a lot because it isn't something that I have the comfort in talking about. I am shy and an introvert, so talking about my accomplishment isn't something that I am comfortable doing.

The fear of someone wanting to be like me when there is still so much of me to discover is hard, but I do know that these people must think a lot of me to want to follow in my footsteps.

The journey that I am taking is something that I know I need. I need to find my passions, and hopefully I can turn some of my passions into part of my job but more so a part of my life and who I show the public.
